The Municipal Capacity Development Program (MCDP) was formally launched in November 2006. Its roots are based on the outcomes of the Clearing the Path Initiative and developed as a partnership between SARM, SUMA, New North and Government Relations.
MCDP was created with the goal of promoting growth, cooperation and community development through inter-municipal partnership. The partnering organizations recognized a need to:
- Assist municipalities in building capacity for planning;
- Promote cooperation among municipalities to deliver more cost effective infrastructure and services;
- Further the adoption of inter-municipal growth management plans; and
- Foster long term working relationships amongst communities and encourage collaboration amongst municipalities, including First Nations and Métis communities.
MCDP has adapted and evolved over the years, but has remained committed to these core pursuits.
